The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge has contracted with the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center (MVAC) to monitor cultural resources on the site of the new visitor center and office facilities located near La Crosse, Wis. An earlier on-site archaeological investigation by Region 3 archaeologist, David Kluth, recommended further steps to protect and properly excavate any cultural resources that might be encountered. MVAC archaeologist, Wendy Holtz-Leith stated, “A bulldozer is used to remove the first 1.5 feet of soil followed by hand excavating. Fortunately we haven’t found any significant discoveries.”All this effort is a precursor to implementing an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act project.
